Boat with about 70 migrants, including three dead, set sail in El Hierro, Canary Islands

The archipelago of Canary Islandsoff the coast of northwest Africa, is facing its worst migration crisis since 2006.

Three migrants were found dead in a boat that sank yesterday Saturday on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands. About 70 people were on the boat irregular immigrantsa spokesman for the rescue services told AFP, adding that “several” passengers were taken to hospital to receive medical attention.

The Canary Islands archipelago, off the coast of northwest Africa, is facing its worst migration crisis since 2006.

In particular the island of El Hierro, the westernmost of the island complex, has now become a key entry point for irregular migrants trying to reach Spain by sea, seeking to get away from the African coast in order to avoid the coast guard.
