Mexico: Gang Violence and Organized Crime

Michoacάνn is one of the 32 Mexican states most affected by violence gangs of organized crime.

As early as October 18, six people were killed during a bar attack in its capital, Morelia.

The attack was carried out by men who got out of two vehicles on the sidewalk in front of the bar, as recorded by security cameras, with the footage being widely reproduced by the media.

The state of Michoacάνn is among the strongholds of the powerful New Generation of Jalisco cartel, an opponent of the Sinaloa cartel of the most famous Mexican drug lord, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who has been sentenced to life in prison in the United States.

US authorities are offering a $ 10 million reward for information leading to the capture of the cartel leader, “El Menzo”, or Nemesio Osegera Cervantes.

The Jalisco New Generation cartel is one of the world’s leading producers of methamphetamines, the US Department of Justice said in March 2020.

More than 36,000 homicides were committed in Mexico last year.
