The new film by the four-time Oscar-nominated actress Saoirse Ronan (“Wish and Atonement”, “Brooklyn”, “Lady Bird: A Time to Fly” and “Little Women”), 30, is about to debut on London Film Festival which takes place between the 9th and 20th of October. “Blitz” will have its first showing on Wednesday (9).
The plot is set in London during the Second World War and follows George, a 9-year-old boy, sent to the interior of England to stay safe. Determined to return home to his mother and grandfather, he begins an adventure full of challenges and dangers.
In addition to Ronan, the cast includes Harris Dickinson (“Triangle of Sadness”), Benjamin Clementine (“Dune”), Stephen Graham (“The Chef”) and the newcomer Elliott Heffernan . Directed by the Oscar and Bafta winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
In an interview with Variety, the filmmaker revealed that the story is told from a child’s perspective and how important this is given the current global situation with wars happening around the world.
“ANDI’m so grateful to be able to contribute in some way to the ever-widening conversation about where we are now. As adults, at what point do we compromise? At what point do we close our eyes? At what point do we stop listening? At what point do we become passive about things? With children it’s good and bad. It’s right and wrong. So this film can, in some way, help us reorient ourselves through the eyes of a child,” he said.
“Seeing war through the eyes of a child is very important. When a child’s parents argue, the situation is three times worse than it really is. And so, to see the war – which is bad enough – in the child’s eyes, he should be saying to us: ‘What the hell are we doing?’, he continued.
In Brazil, “Blitz” will be available from November 22nd on AppleTV+.
