The US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken promised today that American support to Ukraine would be maintained, after a meeting he had in Davos with the president Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We are determined to maintain our support for Ukraine and we are working very closely with Congress” on this issue, said A. Blinken during a meeting with V. Zelensky on the sidelines of his meeting World Economic Forum in Davos of Switzerland. “I know our European colleagues will do the same thing.”
The White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivanwho was also present, assured the Ukrainian president that the United States and its allies are determined to “ensure that Russia fails and Ukraine wins.”
V. Zelensky thanked the Biden administration and the “bipartisan support” in the US Congress. “We are truly counting on your continued tremendous support,” he said.
He mainly mentioned the American Patriot system, which helped Ukraine in its air defense against Russian missile attacks.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the United States has sent approximately $44 billion in military aid to Ukraine, plus many billions in aid and economic support.
The Biden administration released its latest aid package in late December, but Republicans are making their support for a new package conditional on a drastic tightening of US immigration policy.
Some among them, notably former President Donald Trump, who is seen as a favorite in his camp in the presidential nomination campaign, express reservations about this aid and the chances of a Ukrainian victory.
Overall, the Biden administration is asking Congress to approve a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine, as well as for Israel and Taiwan, goals that are more popular with Republicans.
