A sweeping power outage left millions of people in Spain, Portugal and parts of France without electricity on Monday, leading to chaotic scenes and extensive disruption. A problem in connecting electricity between France and Spain was one of the factors that contributed to the interruption, said the head of a commercial organization representing the European electricity industry. Eurelectric’s Christian Ruby, told the BBC Radio 4’s The World Tonight show that a “specific incident with a link between France and Spain” occurred on Monday. Ruby also said that this “meant that the Spanish network was disconnected from the wider European network”. He added that the incident of the interconnection was unlikely to have caused the interruption in itself and that “there may have been other elements in this equation”.
