“Black Mirror”: Understand the end of the episode “ordinary people”

The anthological series “Black Mirror” He debuted his seventh season at the Netflix streaming service on Thursday (10). The first of six new episodes, “Ordinary people”, is starring Rashida Jones and Chris the ‘Dowd .

Amanda (Jones) and Mike (O’Dowd) are a middle class couple who seek to build a family. But when Amanda enters a coma, her husband, in mourning, continues with a procedure that can save her life.

Mike meets Gaynor (Tracee Ellis Ross), representative of a medical technology company that proposes an experimental technology called Riveormind, which promises to restore Amanda’s cognitive function. There are some caveats – she will need to sleep for a few more hours and stay inside the coverage area (just like mobile towers) – surgery is free and the signature model costs $ 300 (approximately $ 1700.00) per month.

Spoiler Alert: The following text contains spoilers of the first episode of the seventh season of “Black Mirror”.

Throughout the episode, the couple realize the disadvantages of depending on a signature service to survive. Mike soon gets tired of making extra shifts to cover expenses, and Amanda sleeps more and more, as RiverMind servers are increasingly demanding their energy.

Understand the end of “ordinary people”

Over the years, Amanda begins to “stop working” right and the couple is losing everything they have slowly. At one point, Amanda decides that she no longer wants to live if the only option is to be at the mercy of the company. She asks Mike to kill her while she is unconscious.

One of the side effects that Amanda faces is to speak randomly advertise to people because she has no money to pay the company’s top plan (similar to current streaming services). In one of these moments, Mike decides to take his life out of his beloved.

“Then we see Mike entering the room and we leave a little in charge of your imagination what will happen when it closes the door ” delivered director Chalie Brooker, on Netflix’s official website.

“You will notice that he looks straight at you, the viewer at the last moment,” added the professional.

“They are increasing the amount of hours she needs to sleep, and she is tired all the time. It’s exhaustive. And now they are living this existence in which she is constantly announcing things. I felt that her request, being suffocated to death while doing a publi, seemed perfectly dark and perfectly Black Mirror,” Brooker concluded.
