Bird flu virus mutated in 1st serious human case in US, says CDC

Last week, the United States reported its first serious case of the virus, in a man over 65 who suffered from severe respiratory illness and lives in Louisiana.

The patient was infected with the D1.1 genotype of the virus, which has recently been detected in wild birds and poultry in the US, and not the B3.13 genotype, which has been detected in dairy cows, humans and some poultry in several states.

To the mutations seen in the patient are rare but have been reported in some cases from other countries and, more frequently, during serious infections. One of the mutations was also seen in another serious case from British Columbia, Canada.

No transmission from the patient in Louisiana to others has been identified to date, the CDC said.
