Vote counting continues slowly in several key states and is momentarily halted in others. Even the differences between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden are very small and neither reaches 270 voters. Biden’s chances have improved in the last hours, but the doors for victory are open for both candidates.
The lack of definition in the elections has not yet had a strong impact on the markets. The futures of Wall Street and the prices of the main crosses of the currency market, are volatile, but at the moment, close to the levels where they closed on Tuesday.
State by State:
Wisconsin (10 voters): Biden went ahead, with 97% of the votes counted and recently widened the difference from 49.5% to 48.8%.
Michigan (16 voters): Biden came forward but it is a technical tie at 49.2% with 89% of the votes counted. To continue with the trend of the last hours, the state would go to Biden, leaving him at the doors of the White House.
Nevada (6 voters): Biden has 49.3% against Trump’s 48.7%, a difference of less than 80,000 votes, so with 86% of the votes counted, there is still no winner. In this state, no more voting data will be released until Thursday.
Arizona (11 voters): The Fox network already gave Biden the winner here, but other media still show the indefinite race. Biden has 51.8% against Trump’s 46.8%, but with only 82% of the votes counted.
Pennsylvania (20 voters): Trump leads with 55.1% against Biden’s 43.6%. This difference would seem definitive, but it remains to count 25% of the votes by mail and of those who voted before, who are favoring Biden by a large majority, leaving the result open.
Georgia (16 voters): With 92% of the votes counted, Trump has 50.5% against 48.3% and consolidates the difference, but as in other states, there is a lack of counting votes by mail that seem to favor Biden in this region. The margins of triumph could shrink.
Alaska (3 voters): Trump leads 61.4% to 34.7% but with only 36% of the votes counted, which are those who voted on Tuesday. The rest of the votes will not be counted for at least one week.
What does Trump have to do to win?
Maintain the difference in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Michigan or Georgia may yield if they win in Nevada. If he regains the leadership in Wisconsin, and keeps Georgia and Michigan, he may even lose in Pennsylvania and still win four more years in the White House.
What does Biden have to do to win?
If Nevada is secure, it is enough for him to keep Wisconsin and go ahead in Michigan, even if he loses Pennsylvania and Georgia. If Nevada yields, in addition to Michigan and Wisconsin, he would also need to win in Pennsylvania or Georgia.
