The President of the United States, Joe Biden, stated that Congress could be guilty of something close to criminal negligence if it does not approve financing for Ukraine, and thanked German Chancellor Olaf Scholz this Friday (9) for his leadership in offering military aid to Kiev.
Scholz, who briefly stopped by Washington to lend his support to Biden's efforts to secure funding for Ukraine, met with the president at the White House to discuss Russia's war and the Middle East crisis.
Before the meeting, Scholz told reporters he was pleased with the U.S. Senate's move on Thursday to advance a $95.34 billion package that includes aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, after Republicans blocked legislation that included reforms in immigration policies.
“If it occurs, the failure of the United States Congress to help Ukraine will be close to criminal negligence,” Biden said in the Oval Office, with the German chancellor sitting at his side.
“I am very happy that in Europe we made decisions to obtain the necessary financial support for the budget,” said Scholz. “And also that Germany is ready to increase its support in the delivery of weapons.”
The European Union approved a four-year, €50 billion package for Ukraine last week. The nation, which aims to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), depends on the West for military and financial support.
