As if Democrats needed anything more convincing, the midterm elections, which take place this Tuesday (8), carry enormous risks. US President Joe Biden delivered a candid assessment during a fundraiser last Friday in Chicago.
“If we lose the House and Senate, it’s going to be a horrible two years,” Biden told the small crowd gathered inside a hotel hall, where cameras were not allowed. “The good news is that I will have a veto pen,” she concluded.
After two years of Democratic control of Congress, a change in leadership in the House or Senate — or both — would take Biden’s presidency into an entirely new phase. Biden himself has been projecting optimism in the final days of the campaign, but reality is setting in for Democrats that his majority rule in Congress could soon end — and Biden’s ability to pass his top priorities could go with it.
White House officials have begun pointing out that his losses likely won’t be as bad as in previous elections, and say the fact that Democrats have a fighting chance is a positive sign for Biden. But his advisers privately acknowledge that they don’t see a viable path for Democrats to retain their majority in the House, even though the president and his core team are starting the day with the view that the prospect of Democrats retaining a majority in the Senate is real. – even if it is one that can take days, or more, to fully realize.
However, even losing a few seats — Republicans only need five seats to take control of the House — would mean dramatic changes for the president.
Republicans on Capitol Hill have made it very clear that if they take control of Congress, Biden must be investigated by oversight committees and committees. The notes range from Biden’s son Hunter’s business; to what Republicans claim is political interference by the FBI and the Department of Justice; to the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Once the results of the midterm elections are released, national attention will immediately turn to 2024, including on the question of whether Biden will seek a second term.
Biden pointed to family gatherings as important to his decision-making, though people familiar with the matter say the first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, would support a second candidacy. For weeks, the president and his advisers have maintained that their intention, for now, is to run again.
