Former President Joe Biden praised Harvard University for firm posture against the demands of Trump government political changes during a private seminar on Wednesday (17) at Harvard Kennedy School, the Harvard Crimson newspaper said.
Discussing with a small group of students, Biden praised the university’s response as a powerful example of leadership during the growing impasse with Washington.
“Harvard manifested in a way that no one else did,” said the former president, according to two students present at the confidential event, said Crimson. “You should be really grateful.”
When questioned by a newspaper reporter if Harvard should file a lawsuit against the federal government, the democrat reiterated support for the university approach, but did not defend a lawsuit.
“I think Harvard should simply do what he is doing – raise everyone,” he said.
A Harvard Kennedy School spokesman refused Crimson’s request to comment on Joe Biden’s statements.
A former president’s spokesman also refused to comment, according to the newspaper.
The seminar was scheduled weeks before the start of the financial impasse between Harvard and the Trump administration.
After rejecting government demands, including the end of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and the delivery of information on international students, the university faces the potential loss of tax exemption status and a freezing of $ 2.2 billion in financing – a financial blow that caused interruptions and generated concerns about staff and ongoing projects.
Joe Biden’s visit to Harvard marks a rare public appearance since he left office in January.
On Tuesday (15), he made his first public comments at a conference of disability advocates in Chicago.
