Biden Meets Moldovan President – ‘Reaffirmed US’s Unwavering Support’

THE Joe Biden met with the president of Moldova Maya Sandu and emphasized that the US continues to support its country.

The meeting between the two leaders took place in Poland in the wake of Sandu’s accusation of a Russian plot to topple the leadership of the former Soviet republic that averted Chisinau.

On the occasion of the completion of one year since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the US president traveled to Kiev and then to Warsaw in order to calm the concern of Eastern European governments about the geopolitical developments in the region.

“President Biden reaffirmed the unwavering support of the United States for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova” during his meeting with Moldovan President Maya Sandu, the White House statement said. “He raised the issue of continued US assistance to Moldova, in order to strengthen the country’s resilience at the political and economic level (…) and to deal with the effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine,” he adds.

Sandu denounced reports a few days ago that Russia was planning to overthrow the government of Moldova and sow “chaos” in the former Soviet republic.

After the resignation of the Gavrilita government, new Prime Minister Dorin Rechan pledged a pro-European course and called for the demilitarization of Transnistria — a Moscow-backed breakaway region bordering Ukraine.

The Kremlin has denied the allegation of a plot to topple the Moldovan government, accused Chisinau of an anti-Russian agenda and warned Moldova against escalating tensions with Russia.
