The American president Joe Biden categorically denied today any involvement by the US or its allies in the recent mutiny of the Russian mercenary company Wagner against the Kremlin. “We made it clear that we were not involved, we didn’t have the slightest involvement in it” said the US president.
He confirmed he had a conference call with leaders of allied countries to make sure there would be a coordinated response. “They agreed with me that we had to make sure we didn’t give (Russian President) Putin any excuse to blame the West and put the blame on NATO,” he said.
President Biden said he instructed national security advisers to update him “every hour that passes” and prepare for various scenarios, which he did not specify.
He also estimated that Yevgeny Prigozhin’s rebellion is part of a wider power struggle in Russia, adding that “it is still too early to draw safe conclusions.”
He stressed that, regardless of the developments in Russia, the United States will continue to support Ukraine and announced that he will have a new communication with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the next few hours.
