Following the shooting at a school in the US state of Georgia, President Joe Biden has called on Congress to pass stronger gun control measures.
“I want to say a few words about yesterday’s school shooting. As a nation, we cannot continue to accept the carnage of gun violence. I am a gun owner. I believe strongly in the amendment. We need… more than thoughts and prayers,” Biden warned.
The president addressed congressional Republicans, saying it was time for them to “finally” say “enough is enough.”
“We have to do something together. Let’s ban assault weapons,” he stressed.
Biden also called for stronger background checks, an end to immunity for gun manufacturers and for parents who let their children get guns to be held accountable.
“I realize I’m in a rural area, like the rural parts of my state, where guns — we all have them,” he said.
“And it’s not popular to talk about this, but the truth is that there is a difference between rational and irrational,” he pondered.
The Democrat said that while it “won’t bring those kids back,” “it would help save lives if we did the things we’re talking about.”
“We can do it if we do it together. And I really think we can,” he said.
Biden has long pushed to renew the assault weapons ban but has been blocked by Republicans in Congress.
