Biden will take office today: it’s the day of the oath. The new page of American history. Today 20 January 2021 at 17.30 Italian will start l’Inauguration Day. Joe Biden e Kamala Harris they will be sworn in as President and Vice President of the United States respectively before Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
An induction ceremony that marks several firsts. The historical one of an African American vice president who swears in front of the first African American woman of the Supreme Court.
The first time (almost) without an audience, they will be present in total one thousand people all by invitation and with a city, Washington, completely militarized with about 25 thousand soldiers, following the assault on Congress on 6 January. For Obama the audience touched one million people and for Donald Trump more than three hundred thousand.
The former president will leave the White House early in the day for Florida, for the last time on Air Force One. He will not be present at the oath of his successor. A very rare condition that has occurred four more times in American history: with Andrew Johnson who refused to attend the Ulysses Grant ceremony, John Adams, second American president, who didn’t show up at the Thomas Jefferson inauguration, finally John Quincy Adams, absent from the settlement of Andrew Jackson e Richard Nixon who in 1974 resigned overwhelmed by the Watergate scandal and did not witness the oath of his successor, Gerald Ford. The latter was thus the first to become president without being elected.
No final dance, no parade in presence (it will only be virtual). The Inauguration Day will be streamed live and celebrated with a special event on television hosted by Tom Hanks which will see the participation of many stars, including Lady Gaga who will sing the national anthem e Jennifer Lopez.
