Between delays and tributes, the 1st day of the special group takes samba back to Anhembi

The first day of parades by the São Paulo Samba Schools special group was marked by delays and some technical problems. Even so, this did not stop the joy and samba from returning to the Anhembi Sambadrome after a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first school to parade was the tucuruvi, with the plot “Carnivals… Since then, what has changed? From here to there, what will happen?”. The parade marked the school’s return to the special group, after being disqualified in 2019.

Then came the Colorado do Braswith a tribute to the writer Carolina Maria de Jesus, and the plot “Carolina – A Cinderela Negra do Canindé”.

THE green stain then took over the avenue. With the samba-enredo “Planeta Água”, the school won the stands, which sang loudly along with the performers.

Before starting her parade, the current runner-up of the São Paulo Carnival had a scare. Part of the arm of one of the opener’s floats broke. This caused the school to enter the avenue with the timer already ticking four minutes.

Even so, the school members managed to find a solution to the problem, fixing the car and finishing the parade within the allotted time of 65 minutes.

THE major tone arrived to honor the Brazilian Northeast with a version of the story “The Little Prince”, by French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Popular legend says that the author was inspired by the city of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, for the work.

One of the biggest problems of the night happened right after the school parade. The group’s last car spilled oil on the avenue, which required more careful cleaning by city hall teams and further increased the delay.

After a long waiting period, the Vila Maria entered the Anhembi with a journey through civilizations, portraying the dark time of the Roman Empire, which, in a struggle for absolute power, promotes wars with the suffering of the people.

THE Academics from Tatuapé was also impacted by the delay in cleaning the track. Near dawn, the school began its parade. Then, another problem happened on the samba night.

One of the floats got stuck and only left the place with the help of dozens of Tatuapé members and even a tractor. The fans and members of the blue and white community in the stands were distressed by the situation.

However, the school also overcame adversity and finished the parade within the time allowed.

To close the first day of performances by the special group at Anhembi, and with the sun rising, the royal dragons bet on a samba-enredo in honor of Adoniran Barbosa, one of the main names in Brazilian samba.

One of the school’s flag bearers fell ill within 30 minutes of the parade and had to be removed.

The second day of parades in the capital of São Paulo will see the return of the city’s greatest champion of Carnival to the elite, Vai-Vai. In addition, the last winner, Águia de Ouro, joins Gaviões da Fiel, Mocidade Alegre, Barroca Zona Sul, Rosas de Ouro and Império Casa Verde. The event is scheduled to start at 10:30 pm.
