THE Germany plans the market 60 Chinook helicopters from Boeing in a value package of up to 8 billion euros, including the necessary infrastructure for the aircraft, a parliamentary source told Reuters today.
The total amount, as relayed by the Athens News Agency, includes the supply of the helicopters CH-147 Chinook against 6.27 billion euros, 700 million euros for maintenance, 240 million euros for national contracts and 750 million euros for infrastructure, the source said, confirming reports from other media.
The deal must be approved by the German parliament’s budget committee, which is due to discuss the contract before parliament’s summer recess.
Germany announced its intention to buy 60 Chinook heavy duty helicopters by Boeing last year to replace its aging fleet of CH-53 helicopters. The original budget was 6 billion euros for helicopters.
In the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz ended Germany’s pacifist policy in February 2022, sharply increasing defense spending and committing 100 billion euros to the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.
