President Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus' longtime leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin's main ally, said he will run for another term in elections scheduled for 2025, Belarusian state news agency BelTA reported on Sunday (25).
Lukashenko made the announcement during an assembly, after voting in the parliamentary and local elections.
When asked if he planned to run in the next presidential race, the current president said: “I will.”
Lukashenko has been in power since 1994. His regime has been repeatedly accused of human rights violations and stifling political opposition.
During the last elections in 2020, the opposition alleged that Lukashenko's regime engaged in electoral fraud to keep him in power.
Belarus has been an important partner of Russia since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine two years ago, when Minsk allowed Moscow's troops to enter the country across the 1,000km Ukraine-Belarus border.
