Belarus has promised that all Russian troops deployed on its territory as part of a large-scale military exercise will leave the country by the scheduled end of the exercise on February 20.
“No troops or equipment will remain on Belarusian soil after the exercises with Russia,” Foreign Minister Vladimir Makey told a news conference as the deployment of Russian troops fueled fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
He said the military exercises were conducted because of NATO’s threatening activity in the region, as Western countries support Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow.
“It’s a response to the actions of our Western partners,” McKay said, but “neither Moscow nor Minsk has an interest in a war.”
The Russian-Belarusian exercises began on February 10, but were preceded by a major deployment of Russian forces since January with the involvement of armored vehicles, S-400 anti-aircraft missiles or even fighter jets.
The exercises were held in the territory of Moscow, an ally of northern Ukraine, while Russia has gathered more than 100,000 men on the Russian-Ukrainian border. Russian authorities said they began a retreat yesterday, Tuesday.
As a sign of relaxation, the Ukrainian Minister of Defense announced this morning that his country’s military envoy to Belarus was able to attend some high schools yesterday.
