Chinese President Xi Jinping today congratulated new German Chancellor Olaf Solz on his election and noted that China intends to take relations with Germany to a “new level”.
Sino-German relations have generally been good over the past 16 years, in contrast to those between Beijing and other European countries, which may have been strained, such as France, Britain or, more recently, Lithuania.
“China intends to consolidate and deepen mutual political trust, to expand contacts and cooperation in various fields with Germany,” Xi was quoted as saying by the Chinese news agency New China (Xinhua).
Angela Merkel has always worked for rapprochement with China, due to its unquestionable diplomatic and economic role and the importance of the Chinese market to German industry.
The speed with which Xi Jinping congratulated the new chancellor contrasts with the attitude of US President Joe Biden.
In the wake of tensions with Washington, the Chinese president had needed more than two weeks to react to his election to the US presidency.
