Because we need more series like those of Zerocalcare

For the second time, in approaching a Zerocalcare series I thought, “Why are there so few series like this?” And the main reason was not trivially the fact that I liked it. It was something more, which made me think that maybe if we watched more of this stuff on Netflix or any streaming platform, we’d be smarter. Or at least brighter, more attentive, more critical of what is happening around us. For that, here a number of reasons for which This world won’t make me bad convinces us so much that we make ourselves say “I want more”.

Current affairs series can be fun

Speak about migrantsOf drugOf economic difficulties can make you laugh (in the good sense of the word). It doesn’t matter to talk only about superficiality to get your head off. Zerocalcare has managed to unite the discomfort of migrants arriving at reception centres in Italy, without a euro and the language, a popular language, a mood of a series that can also appeal to those who, when they see those same faces on the news, change the channel.

Armadillo effect

Ok the philosophies, the good rhetoric of helping the weakest, bending over backwards to realize one’s life and save that of those who can’t make it. But beyond the revolutions we need someone to bring us back to earth, when we aim too high or we feel responsible for the world on the shoulders. For this there is the Armadillothe consciousness of the protagonist, that instrument anti-cringe that makes us face reality.

Young people talking to young people (for real)

Zeroin real life Michael Rech, is 39 years old. Not 25 but not even 60. How Dry and how Sarah. That age group that has experienced the delicate moment of waking up in a reality that seemed fantastic but hadn’t, in fact, nothing to offer. The protagonist experiences the discomfort of all of us: that sense of disenchantment and difficulty in realizing oneself, in finding one’s place in the world. And we believe in Zerocalcare because he really lived it: an artist who did comic books before it was fashionable, in the dark of his room until a few years ago. Not very trendy, if you think about it.

How scary to be divisive

At a time when politics is a slogan, the right aggressive and the left without ideas, there is a space of gray where everyone takes refuge so as not to choose between black and white. Deciding which side to take seems increasingly difficult. This world won’t make me bad it pushes us out of the fear of saying: «But do you know that I agree when you call them Nazis? But do you know that maybe it’s really an injustice that politics doesn’t respond to the needs of citizens?». Not everyone likes being divisivebut when someone else does it we give them credit. So well done, Zerocalcare.
