Bebe Vio and the beauty of sport in the Italian Constitution

Password: let’s move! The Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved (312 votes in favor and none against) the amendment which introduces sport in the Italian Constitutionto be precise the term “sports activity” in article 33 of the Constitution.

Excellent news for a country which, like the rest of Europe, increasingly has to deal with sedentary lifestyle and the many health problems that derive from it. «Art and science are free and their teaching is free. The Republic dictates the general rules on education and establishes state schools for all levels and levels. Bodies and private individuals have the right to establish schools and educational institutes, without burden to the State” stated article 33 until yesterday, which now goes on to certify that «the Republic recognizes the educational, social and psychophysical well-being value of sporting activity in all its forms».

All good, then. Or almost, because on the deadline “sport activity” there are those who have twisted their mouths a bit. First of all for not using the word sport and secondly for not having preferred the term “motor activity”, considered less “competitive” and more in line with the search for psycho-physical well-being.

In the end, however, the important thing is to have brought home the result. The new wording, in fact, implies a concrete commitment on the part of the State in the development and support of sporting activities by allocating them greater funds than those allocated so far.

The fencer spoke at the Chamber of Deputies the day before the vote that introduced sport into the Italian Constitution Bebe Vio he spoke about the importance of sport, but also of education. «I have always seen studying as a means to achieve what I would like in life»his words, «we all have a dream and education gives us the possibility and the power to achieve it».

«For me, school has always been that wonderful place where I could team up with my classmates. I joined the national team at 14 years old, but my classmates have always been my luck. When I returned from the races they explained a subject to me and gave me a hand. Now I have finally graduated.”

The Paralympic athlete is a river in flood and encourages young people to follow her example. «They often asked me how I managed to train and study at the same time. In reality, in my opinion, we are very good at making excuses, lots of excuses.”

In closing, a message to keep in mind. «Guys, dream and try to make your dreams come true, make them a goal. Get busy, make no excuses and work!
