The director Matt Reeves confirmed that his vision for the franchise Batman with Robert Pattinson (“Twilight”) as Batman, will continue as a trilogy . The second film in the series is scheduled to premiere in October 2026 .
In an interview with Collider, the director explained that the production of “Penguin”, the series that will address the origins of the villain played by Colin Farrell (“The Lobster”), did not change the course of the project for the films in the trilogy.
“It will still be a trilogy “, he confirmed to the site. “I mean, it’s following very closely the path that we envisioned.” In order for this to come to fruition, however, he explained that it was necessary to develop the story of the villain Penguin in parallel.
“We decided to make ‘Penguin’ to continue the character’s story and show his beginning of rise to power . In ‘Batman,’ he’s presented as a mid-level figure, not yet recognized as the big boss we know in the mythology,” he said. “That was intentional, because even though it wasn’t Batman’s origin story, I wanted to explore the origins of the other Rogues Gallery characters and this story would be the basis for the next film.”
This narrative sequence is so essential to his vision of “Batman” that the hero’s presence in the new HBO series was considered, but ended up being discarded in the end .
The director also recently shared that “Batman 2” will explore how corruption has taken hold in Gotham City and “take the plot to places Bruce Wayne never would have initially imagined.”
Starring Robert Pattinson, “Batman” follows Bruce Wayne as he investigates a series of murders of political figures in Gotham City. This mystery leads the hero to confront corruption in the city and examine the role of his own family. The film was released in 2022 in theaters and is available for streaming on Max .
Filming for the new “Batman” has been confirmed for early 2025. Its premiere was scheduled for October 2026, after being postponed .
