The Basilica

Raised high on Mount Esquilino, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four papal basilicas of Rome. THE Temple is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and parts of the current building were built around the year 432 at the request of Pope Sisto III.

Visitation

The Basilica opens daily from 7am to 7pm and has free admission. The museum complex can be visited upon purchase of reception admission. Visits are made from Monday to Saturday, from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, with the last entrance at 17:30.
