Banknotes with the face of King Charles III entered circulation in the United Kingdom this Wednesday (5), almost two years after he succeeded the late Queen Elizabeth as head of state.
Charles’ image will appear on new five, 10, 20 and 50 pound notes issued by the Bank of England. Existing notes featuring Elizabeth will continue to circulate.
“This approach is in line with guidance from the Royal Household, to minimize the environmental and financial impact of this change,” said the Bank of England. “This means that the public will begin to see King Charles III’s new notes very gradually.”
Elizabeth was the first monarch to appear on British banknotes, in contrast to England’s coins, which have carried images of kings and queens for more than a thousand years.
The design of the new banknotes was revealed in December 2022, shortly after the Charles coins entered circulation. Apart from the new monarch, the design of the banknotes remains unchanged.
