Residents of the Salgueiro Complex in São Gonçalo, a metropolitan region of Rio, report that criminals are setting fire to barricades scattered throughout the streets of the favelas. In a video, it is possible to see cars that were set on fire and used as barricades on one of the streets in the region.
The State Secretariat of Military Police reported that officers from the 7th Military Police Battalion of São Gonçalo reinforced policing around the community and so far, there is no information on arrests, seizures or injuries.
Violence has had a major impact on life in the region. According to the São Gonçalo City Hall’s education department, the following municipal schools: Pastor Haroldo Gomes, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Professora Niuma Goulart Brandão, João Aires Saldanha, Umei Professora Natalina Muniz de Oliveira, Salgado Filho and Marinheiro Marcílio Dias, located in the Salgueiro Complex, are closed on Wednesday (4). Seven schools in total. The State Education Department reported that three schools had to be closed, affecting at least 650 students.
For the same reason, the Municipal Health and Civil Defense Department of São Gonçalo said that the Carlos Chagas, Palmeiras, Albert Sabin, CSU Salgueiro, Leôncio Corrêa and Neuza Goulart Brizola family health units will also not be operating today.
Residents are afraid of violence in the area. Even getting to and from the Salgueiro Complex is complicated. According to the Federation of Mobility Companies of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Semove, the operation of 10 bus lines has been changed, affecting the routes of 33 buses in total.
For residents heading towards Complexo do Salgueiro, Semove informs that the lines are only operating as far as Rodo and Itaúna.
