Bahia: what we know about the accident that left at least 25 dead

At least 25 people died last Sunday night (7) after a serious accident between a truck and a minibus in the interior of Bahia. The incident took place on the BR-324 highway, near the city of Gavião (250 km from Salvador).

All the occupants of the bus were residents of Jacobina (340 km from Salvador) and, at the time of the accident, were returning from Guarajuba beach. Among the dead, three were in a truck, which was loaded with mangoes. The rest were on the bus.

According to Jacobina city hall, 24 people died at the scene. Another victim died after being admitted to a hospital.

Among the fatal victims was a pregnant woman, according to the Anjos Jacuípenses Volunteer Brigade, which helped with the rescue work.

There is still no detailed information about the circumstances that caused the accident, as well as the responsibilities.

Eight people are hospitalized

In a post on social media early this Monday afternoon (8), Jacobina city hall released the names of eight people who are hospitalized as a result of the accident.

Are they:

  • Arthur Lima Amorim
  • Flavia dos Santos
  • Mayssa Grassi
  • Joilson Rodrigues dos Santos
  • Ana Clara Santos Silva
  • Ludmila Lima Mandu
  • Maria da Conceição Fernandes de Jesus
  • Benjamin – child

There is no information about the health status of these people.

Bus crashed on BR-324, in Bahia;  at least 25 people died

Where was the accident

The collision was on BR-324, between the cities of Gavião and Nova Fátima.

At the time where the crash occurred, the highway was a single lane, with just one lane in each direction. In some points, there is no shoulder.

In urban perimeter sections, the speed limit is 60 km/h.

Early this Monday morning, the section where the accident occurred remained closed for forensic examinations. The road was reopened around 8am today.

Collective wake

Jacobina city hall announced this Monday that it will hold a collective wake for the bus passengers who died in the accident. Funeral ceremonies will be held at the municipal sports hall.

The municipal administration also declared three days of official mourning.
