The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) of Bahia contracted the supply of body cameras, or bodycams, for the state’s military police uniforms. The technology company that wins the bid will have 60 days to supply the first 1,100 cameras and must deliver 3,300 in a year.

The state has the second highest police fatality rate in the country, according to a survey carried out by the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP), published in the 2023 Brazilian Public Security Yearbook.

More than R$23 million will be invested in the equipment, which will capture, transmit, store, manage, in addition to providing custody of digital evidence obtained in activities and investigations. In addition to Bahia, at least five other Brazilian states use the equipment. Minas Gerais, Pará, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and São Paulo have already adopted bodycams, equipment that has as one of its objectives the reduction of police lethality.

Between 2021 and 2022, São Paulo reduced overall lethality by 63.7%, 33.3% in lethality in battalions in which cameras were not implemented and 76.2% in lethality in battalions in which cameras began to be used. The data comes from a study carried out by FBSP in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).

The state of Bahia recorded a rate of 10.4 police deaths for every 100,000 inhabitants in 2022. In a note, the secretariat stated that cases of police intervention that resulted in death showed a reduction of 5.8% in 2023, until August this year.
