One of the country's main tourist destinations, Chapada Diamantina National Park, in Bahia, is suffering from a forest fire that has lasted three days.
The Bahia Fire Department reported that it is working together with the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) and volunteer firefighters to combat the fire, which has been occurring in the Vale do Capão region, in the city of Palmeiras, since last Saturday (30).
Two Air Tractor model aircraft assist ground teams in combat.
According to the Vale do Capão Volunteer Brigade (BV-VC), the fire is of criminal origin. The Bahia Civil Police said they found no incident record for the location.
In the bulletin updated this Monday (01), the BV-VC reported that a large focus of the fire is still active, in the Morrão and Lençóis regions. The other two fires, in the Serra do Candombá region, were controlled, but remain under monitoring.
Also according to the brigade members, the affected region is very important, as it is where the formation of the Capivara River Basin occurs, and one of the main sources of the Chapada is threatened.
The Vale do Capão Visitor Drivers Association (ACV-VC) asked for water donations for firefighters working to fight the fire.
A CNN contacted ICMBio and is awaiting a response.
