The French authorities have identified a source of it bird flu at a duck breeding farm in the Vendée region, the Ministry of Agriculture announced today. Is the first recorded outbreak of the disease since France began vaccinating birdslast year.
The Vendée region said the cases were detected on Tuesday in a poultry farm with 8,700 ducks in the town of Notre Dame de Riez. All birds were vaccinated.
THE bird fluwhose virus is carried by migratory wild birds and transmitted to farmed birdshas led to the slaughter of thousands of birds in recent years, as a result the market is disrupted, prices are pushed up and concerns are raised about its possible transmission to humans.
To protect its poultry industry, France launched a vaccination program last October, exclusively for ducks, because, as APE-MPE notes, these birds often show no symptoms. The vaccine does not fully protect the birds from the disease, but it limits the spread of the virus and consequently mass slaughter. It is used in conjunction with other poultry biosecurity and control measures.
Since November 27, seven outbreaks of bird flu have been identified in France. Five were on turkey farms, one on a poultry farm and one on ducks.
