Australia: Uncontrolled fires threaten residential areas in Perth

Uncontrolled fires raging in low-lying areas, fueled by high temperatures, which are expected to rise further in the coming days, threaten residential areas in Western Australia, authorities announced today.

The district of Perth, the fourth largest city in the country, issued a warning after the outbreak of fire yesterday Tuesday, which has already charred about a thousand acres of shrubs.

Emergency services have called on residents at risk of leaving immediately “to survive”, as there is a “threat to human lives and homes”.

Meteorologists predict that the temperature in the Perth area will reach 34 ° Celsius and that it will rise as high as 40 ° C by Saturday.

Authorities fear the fire will spread to residential areas due to strong winds.

The alarm and warning issued “remains in force due to the intensity of the wind (…) that continues to exert pressure on the fire zones”, stressed the local Ministry of Fires and Emergencies.

At the same time, a second fire in areas with low vegetation in the southwestern part of the state was “limited but not controlled” yesterday Tuesday afternoon, according to the authorities.

Residents evacuated from areas near the small town of Kirap, about 220 kilometers south of Perth, have been warned not to return home as conditions are still “very dangerous”.

Western Australia is experiencing a record heatwave this summer in the southern hemisphere. Perth recorded more than ten consecutive days that the mercury remained above 40 ° Celsius.

Last month, the coastal city of Onslau recorded the highest temperature in the Australian years: the mercury showed 50.7 ° Celsius.

A year ago, a fire destroyed 86 homes on the outskirts of Perth and burned 110,000 acres of land.

Fires are spreading around the world and are linked to various phenomena that scientists have been waiting for due to climate change and global warming. The rising temperature, the fact that the heat waves become more frequent and that the rainfall decreases in places is an ideal combination for the occurrence of fires.

“Globally, rising temperatures and droughts have prolonged fires and doubled the area at risk of wildfires,” said a draft UN climate report, a copy of which was seized by the French agency in June. of 2021.
