August records 105% higher number of hotspots than any other month in 2023

A survey by Greenpeace Brazil, published on Thursday (29), recorded a 105% increase in the number of hotspots and burned areas in all biomes and Indigenous Lands in Brazilian territory.

According to the organization, while in the entire month of August last year the country registered 28,056 hotspots, from August 1 to 28, 2024, 57,528 hotspots were registered.

Greenpeace highlighted the alarming situation in the Pantanal, where the growth in hotspots between 2023 and 2024 was 3,509%. In the Cerrado, the increase in the same period was 133%.

Furthermore, there was also an increase in hotspots in the Atlantic Forest by 119% and in the Amazon by 79%.

Indigenous Lands

Between January 1 and August 26, 2024, satellite data showed 12,335 hotspots in 300 Indigenous Lands in the country, according to the survey. The data indicates that 11% of all hotspots in Brazil this year occurred in Indigenous Lands.

The Amazon recorded the highest number of hotspots in Indigenous Lands in the period analyzed, with 3,549 hotspots, which are present mainly in degraded areas and consolidated as pasture, according to research by Greenpeace Brazil.

In terms of the area consumed by fire, the indigenous lands of the Cerrado are the most affected, with a burned area of ​​1,731,950 hectares. Next comes the Amazon, with 533,575 hectares affected, and the Pantanal, with an area of ​​366,975 hectares burned.
