The plane crash with 61 victims that occurred this Friday (9) in Vinhedo, in the interior of São Paulo, involving a Voepass ATR model aircraft, raised questions about the safety of this type of aircraft in adverse weather conditions.
In an interview with CNN Brazil aviator Fernando de Borthole, with 20 years of experience, warned about the risks of operating this model in severe ice situations.
According to Borthole, “the ATR has its limitations for the aircraft in those conditions. It is an aircraft that, in icy conditions, the best thing to do is to get out of those conditions.”
The expert stressed, however, that it is premature to point out definitive causes for the accident without an in-depth investigation.
Investigation in progress
The Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa) has already begun investigating the case. Borthole explained that the aircraft’s black boxes, which have apparently already been located, will be essential to clarify the circumstances of the accident.
“There are two black boxes installed in commercial aircraft: one that records cabin audio and another that collects information and data from the aircraft,” the aviator explained.
These devices store crucial data such as the condition of the engines, aircraft systems and the position of the command controls.
The expert stressed the importance of waiting for the official results of the investigation, which could take weeks or even months to complete.
“Cenipa’s role is to find contributing factors, which we don’t even call causes,” explained Borthole, emphasizing that the main objective is to prevent future accidents.
