A 5.48-metre Australian crocodile that held the world record for the largest crocodile in captivity has died, a wildlife sanctuary said on Saturday. He is believed to be over 110 years old.
Cassius, who weighed more than a ton, had been in poor health since October 15, Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat said on Facebook.
“He was very old and was believed to be living beyond the years of a wild crocodile,” according to a publication from the organization, based on Green Island, near the Queensland resort city of Cairns.
“Cassius will be greatly missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever,” they concluded.
The group’s website noted that he had lived in the sanctuary since 1987, after being transported from the Northern Territory, where crocodiles are a key part of the region’s tourism industry.
Cassius, a saltwater crocodile, held the Guinness World Records title as the world’s largest crocodile in captivity.
He inherited the brand after the death of the Philippine crocodile Lolong in 2013, which measured 6.17 m in length, according to Guinness.
