Residents of at least 62 Brazilian cities reported feeling tremors after the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the border between Chile and Argentina last Thursday (18).
The reports were compiled by the USP Seismology Center. Most of the records occurred in the state of São Paulo and in neighboring cities, but tremors were also reported in Maranhão, the Federal District and Santa Catarina.

A resident of Vila Clementino, in the southern part of São Paulo, wrote that, around 11 pm on Thursday, she thought she was dizzy. According to her, in the apartment where she lives, on the 15th floor, the curtain and clothes on the clothesline swayed and there was no wind at the time. “I went down the stairs because I thought it could be something in the building’s structure that could fall.”
The entire building shook, but not all the towers in the condominium felt the same thing. Tower 15 was the one that shook the most. The building shook and I was afraid it would fall.
Resident of Mogi das Cruzes, in Greater São Paulo
“First we felt dizzy. Then we noticed the table shaking. When we looked at the glasses, the liquid was shaking too,” reported a resident of the 7th floor of a building in São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo.
“I was watching TV and suddenly I felt the back of the sofa moving. It felt like the sensation you get when you’re in a hammock. I thought it was dizziness, but it happened very quickly,” said a resident of Nova Odessa (SP), 125 kilometers from the capital of São Paulo.
A man who lives in São João da Boa Vista (SP), 215 kilometers from São Paulo, said that, during the tremor, it seemed like a tractor was passing through the street.
After the tremor, a resident of Lorena, a city near the border between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, reported having called Civil Defense. “They said it was probably a reflection of the earthquake in Chile.”
