More than 10,400 migrants have drowned or been lost at sea trying to reach Spain since the start of 2024, as this year saw a record number of arrivals in the Canary Islands archipelago, according to a report released today by the Spanish non-governmental organization Caminando Fronteras. That number equates to 30 deaths every day, on average, from January 1 to December 15, notes the organization, which notifies port authorities of the presence of vessels in danger. The number of victims is 58% higher than that recorded last year: Caminando Fronteras recorded 6,618 dead or missing migrants in 2023, on all migration routes to Spain.
