As of today April 26: From Guernica’s ashes to Picasso’s “Guernica”

In 1937, the German Air Force launched one of the most iconic air bombings in history, leveling the Basque city of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The blow, which lasted just three and a half hours, scattered death and destruction, leaving behind ruins and a tragic account of civilians. The attack was organized by the so -called “Legion Condor”, the Luftwaffe Nazi Air Force unit on the side of Franco. The aim was to hurt the Democratic morale and to test tactics of mass bombardment, the heralding of those who would follow in World War II. Guernica’s horror, however, was not secret. London’s “Times” correspondent George Stir has conveyed to the world the tragic image of the damaged city, provoking an international outcry. The attack is now considered one of the first mass war crimes against civilians in modern history.
