The Southeast Military Command reduced, this Saturday (21), to 50 the number of soldiers held in the Barueri barracks, in Greater São Paulo.
The Army investigates the diversion of 21 machine guns from the Army War Arsenal.
Upon learning of the disappearance of the weapons, on October 10, 480 soldiers were kept on standby to carry out investigations. On Tuesday (17), the group of inmates fell to 160. Today, 110 were released, leaving 50.
According to the Southeast Military Command, the reduction in barracks occurred due to the evolution of the investigation.
“With the positive evolution of the investigations, we are reducing the number of on-call personnel. Until today there were around 160 soldiers and today even more soldiers were released, leaving around 50 soldiers in the barracks in a position to support the investigations”, he informed the CNN Brigadier General Maurício Viera Gama, chief of staff of the Southeast Military Command.
More weapons recovered
This Saturday (21), the São Paulo Civil Police recovered five .50 machine guns and four other 7.62 mm rifles.
The weapons were in São Roque, in the interior of São Paulo, in a mudflat. Last Thursday (19), another eight weapons were found in Rio de Janeiro.
Four weapons are still missing.
Ongoing procedure
The Army opened a Military Police Inquiry to investigate the theft of weapons. In addition, administrative proceedings are also underway against around 20 military personnel who may have facilitated or failed to commit the theft.
The Southeast Military Command is also reviewing all War Arsenal control procedures through external audits.
