We can say that the era of physical SIM cards is gradually coming to an end. In Europe and Asia, operators are already fully implementing eSIM technology, more and more manufacturers are adding it to their smartphones. However, no one has yet decided to completely switch to eSIM and abandon physical SIM cards. According to rumors, Apple may start this with its upcoming iPhone 14.
According to The Wall Street Journal, eSIM technology has become popular as consumers tend to switch between prepaid plans to get more affordable services. The largest cellular operators see this as a natural evolution, while analysts believe that the rejection of physical SIM cards is only a matter of time. As for Apple, it may launch one iPhone model exclusively with eSIM along with smartphone models that have both eSIM and regular SIM.
Apple began introducing eSIM with the release of the iPhone XS. With the current series of smartphones (iPhone 13), the company allows two eSIMs to be used at the same time, so many users don’t even need to use a physical SIM card. Anthony Goonetilleke, head of strategy for Amdocs, an eSIM software company, said eSIM is the future for security reasons. For example, if a problem is discovered, the operator can easily send a fix to millions of people around the world. It is impossible to do this with a physical SIM card.
By the way, with the transition to eSIM only, Apple can easily abandon Lightning as well. Then the iPhone will not have the usual ports at all.
