Galeão Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, received this Saturday (28) the Antonov AN-124, the largest cargo plane in the world.
The cargo ship brought equipment to Brazil for the operation of the oil and gas industry in Rio de Janeiro. The last time an aircraft of this size landed at Tom Jobim International Airport, Galeão, was in December 2020.
A video published by the aviation channel, Aviation TV, recorded the moment of Antonov’s little.
The plane left Hong Kong on Thursday (26), flew to Mombasa, Kenya, for refueling, and took off for Brazil. The Antonov AN-124 should remain in the country until this Sunday (29), when it leaves for Houston, in the United States.
The aircraft was designed in the 1980s by the Ukrainian design bureau Antonov. The model that landed in Rio is 69 meters long and has the capacity to carry 150 tons of cargo.
Furthermore, the aircraft is 21 meters tall, and has a wingspan of 73 meters — a measurement that goes from one wing to the other.
The AN-124’s landing gear has 24 wheels and enables operations on asphalt, dirt, grass and snow runways. The aircraft is also equipped with a system that allows it to “kneel”, a system that facilitates loading directly from the apron.
Originally, the model was designed to support military and humanitarian actions. Currently, the AN-124 carries out large logistical missions around the world and is required to transport cargo that cannot fit on conventional aircraft.
The runway at Rio’s international airport is the largest for takeoffs and landings in Brazil. According to the concessionaire, it is more than four kilometers long and has a robust structure to accommodate large aircraft.
