Antonio Tajani: We asked for a humanitarian corridor to save the Christians in the Palestinian churches

The Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajaniwho visited today Israel, in his statements on Rai television, referred to the efforts of the Meloni government, with the aim of de-escalating the tension and the possible developments of the next hours in the Middle East. In more detail, Tajani underlined:

“We showed special interest in Christians, with the aim of being able to create a corridor to allow the Christians who are closed in the Palestinian churches to be saved. We asked, upon Israel’s reaction, that the principle of proportionality be respected, referring to the terrible, cowardly attack, the carnage that took place a week ago, a carnage that can only be compared to that of the Nazis and the Islamic State.”

“Heywe hope there will be no attack from the north, by Hezbollah, because on Israel’s border with Lebanon there are approximately 1,300 Italian soldiers, participating in the UN mission, soldiers who must guarantee peace and avoid further conflicts”, added the Italian foreign minister.

Responding to a question about whether there could be contacts with Hamas, the head of Italian diplomacy emphasized:

“It is almost impossible to talk to Hamas. We spoke to the Egyptian president al-Sisi, the King of Jordan and all the Arab countries – including the Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Morocco – and asked them to get in touch with Hamas, with the aim of allowing at least women, children and the elderly to be removed from the occupied territories. We’ll see what happens, it’s all very fluid. And the Vatican is willing to mediate and the main priority, of course, at this stage is the rescue of civilians.”

“From the information available to us, the hostages are not only in the hands of Hamas, but were also handed over to other armed groups that support the conflict with Israel and, consequently, it is also difficult to establish where exactly they are. I don’t know if Israel’s secret services have clear evidence in their hands and think that with a ground operation they could free the hostages,” concluded Antonio Tajani.
