Anthropologist and former MEC secretary Eunice Durham dies at 90

The anthropologist and former secretary of the Ministry of Education Eunice Ribeiro Durham died at the age of 90.

The death was confirmed in a note by the Public Policy Research Center (NUPPs) at USP (University of São Paulo), where she worked as a researcher.

The wake will take place from 11 am, this Wednesday (20), at Ceremonial Mandu, in Itapecerica da Serra, in the interior of São Paulo.

“Professor Eunice was a powerful voice in defense of Science and Research. In addition to its intellectual contribution to Brazilian Anthropology, NUPPs especially remembers its legacy for the area that explores the changes that Higher Education is going through as it responds to the new demands of the knowledge society”, said the research center, in a statement. .

“His intellectual production in this area is even more current when we consider the enormous challenges faced by Education in Brazil today”, added the NUPPs.

Eunice Durham was professor and emeritus at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) at USP, president of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology (ABA) and president of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC).

“Professor Eunice also played an outstanding role in the formulation of policies for Higher Education in democratic Brazil. She was a member of the National Council of Education, President of CAPES and Secretary of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education”, concludes the death note.
