Consolidated as the new Captain America, actor Anthony Mackie made a revelation about his desire to play a character other than Falcon.
In an interview with “Inverse”, he revealed that he sent many letters to Marvel asking to be the Black Panther, played by Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020 at the age of 43.
“I wrote letters to them. I was trying to find a way for them to do Black Panther. And I wanted to be Black Panther because I grew up loving Black Panther,” she said.
However, during a meeting between him, his agent, a Marvel producer and the Russo Brothers directors, Anthony got a chance to join the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), but to be another character.
“I’ll never forget, Joe Russo said, ‘Listen, we’re making this movie. We want you to be in it. We can’t say which character you’re playing or who else will be in it. Would you do it?’ And that was it,” he said in the interview.
Despite not knowing what his character would be, the actor accepted the challenge and was surprised to discover that he would play Falcão.
“What other great comic book figure has enough of a presence to get their own movie? So when they called me and said, ‘Hey, so this is Sam Wilson,’ I was like, really?”
The New Captain America
Anthony Mackie succeeded Captain America’s title. For those who don’t remember, Steve Rogers passed the shield to Sam Wilson at the end of “Avengers: Endgame”.
The transformation was consolidated in the series “Falcão and the Winter Soldier”. Falcão gives up the shield, but everything changes in the final episodes. During a strong dialogue, ex-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) tells Sam:
“They will never let a black man be Captain America. And even if they did, no self-respecting black person would accept being one.”
At the end of the series, the character is in uniform and with the shield. Anthony will make his theatrical debut as the new Avenger in “Captain America: Brave New World,” scheduled for 2024.
