To broaden the frontier of the Marvel cinecomics it is time to become small, indeed very small. This is what happens in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummaniafrom February 15th in theaters with an all-star cast alongside protagonists Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly (Hope Van Dyne/Wasp). Starting from the superheroine’s parents, played by Michael Douglas (Hank) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Janet): the couple – it must be said – is in a state of grace, as can be seen from the press meeting in Zoom link from Los Angeleswhere the world premiere of the highly anticipated blockbuster directed by Peyton Reed took place (behind the camera since the first chapter dedicated to this hero).
Save the world – as is emphasized over and over again in this film – it’s a real family affair because this time Scott’s daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton, who made her soap debut at age four with The valley of the pines).
The new super threat is called Kang the Conqueror, with the face of Jonathan Majorsa Time Lord with an unprecedented destructive force who lives in this subatomic dimension, a quantum world in which all the protagonists find themselves, despite themselves, catapulted.
The heart of the story Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantummaniahowever, it seems that this time it is another: «After a period of hate/love towards his role as Avenger, Above all, Scott wants to be a dad – explains Paul Rudd, who in 2021 People elected Sexiest Man Alive – and now he enjoys being back to a normal life, which obviously does not last ». Hope has also made a big leap forward from the first film: «When we met her – recalls Evangeline Lilly, now very far from Lost and from the castaway role that brought her global success – she was cold, detached and rather solitary, but then she resumed her relationship with her father and at a certain point her mother also re-entered her life. She falls in love (with Scott, ed.) And acts as stepmother to Cassie. We can say that not only has it blossomed but it oozes love from every pore and deals with social issues important to making the world a better place, including global warming.”
The winning recipe of this new film is explained by Michael Douglas, who says he is still incredulous at the idea of being part of the Marvel world: «I love that it talks about the vulnerability of superheroes and that you do it with an incredible sense of humor. And I’m happy that the story includes fun and danger for characters of all ages.
The role of Michelle Pfeiffer is probably the most mysterious of the whole story because her Janet disappeared 30 years ago, when Hope was still a child, to then return without too many explanations from this subatomic world in which she is catapulted again: «She doesn’t want to talk about that period – confirms the actress – but it’s time to face the truth and also a series of questionable choices he has to deal with and which reserve many surprises for his family.
While they are all casually chatting about this experience, the only one posed and stiff in her chair is Kathryn Newton: the 26-year-old Florida native stares at the lens, perhaps to ensure the best profile or the right lights, as if she were doing a live stream on social media from her bedroom and it’s quite endearing, if you think that she’s been in the scene for two decades. Evidently, as she herself admits, she still considers herself a fan, which would explain so much rigidity and embarrassment in front of the camera (even in the film): «I saw the first Marvel movie, Iron Manat 8 years old, and from that moment I started telling everyone that I would become the greatest superhero of all time. I was right, since in the film I reach twelve meters».
All of them have the difficult task of opposing Kang, who his interpreter defines as a role “to which the fans had very high expectations”. All of this, explains the director, takes place in a world that is «inspired by science fiction classicssince the 1960s. There is everything from Barbarella to Flash Gordon, to create this vivid jungle of energy, colors and atmospheres. The quantum world has its own internal logic with creatures tied to specific symbols that we were totally free to create.”
