Taking care of a pregnant woman is always taking care of two hearts – hers and the baby’s. When we talk about anesthesia in pregnancy, this care gains even more delicacy, responsibility and accuracy.
During pregnancy, the woman’s body changes completely: the heart works harder, the lungs have less space, the kidney kidney. They are natural transformations, but that require the anesthesiologist an even more attentive look, especially when there is a need for surgical procedures or childbirth itself.
Pain relief and safety at birth
At the time of delivery, anesthesia is not just about taking pain – it helps build a more positive, safe and welcoming experience.DPR
In normal delivery, continuous epidural analgesia allows pain relief in a personalized and secure way: How labor can last hours, anesthetic doses can be fractionated and adjusted according to the mother’s needs, ensuring comfort throughout the process.
In cesarean section, racianesthesia is the most common technique. It offers total pain relief, with a mother awake and conscious to live this unique moment – always with total safety for the baby.
When pregnancy requires even more attention
In cases of gestational hypertension, diabetes, obesity or heart disease, the anesthetic plan needs to be even more personalized. These situations call for an integrated approach between anesthetist, obstetrician and multiprofessional team, with full focus on the well-being of mother and baby.
And when does the pregnant woman need unparalleled surgery?
The pregnancy does not always follow the expected script. Sometimes the pregnant woman needs surgery that is not related to delivery – such as an appendicectomy or cholecystectomy.
In such cases, anesthesia is possible and secure, provided it respects all the particularities of pregnancy: the stage where pregnancy is, the most appropriate medicines, the correct position of the patient at the surgical table and, of course, constant and careful monitoring of mother and baby.
Anesthesia is careful. And care is affection.
Anesthetizing a pregnant woman is exercising medicine with maximum science and empathy. It is keeping in mind that there is a life that pulsates… within another.
And that each choice made there – from the prior assessment to the last minute of the procedure – can transform outfits, experiences and stories.
