The International Analyst of CNN Fernanda Magnotta warned of the growing possibility of unintentional nuclear accidents amid the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
In his analysis, Magnotta highlighted that, even without a deliberate nuclear attack, the conflict is “increasingly flirting with the possibility of unintended accidents or disasters”.
This situation could have detrimental repercussions for the populations of large cities in the conflict area.
Nuclear threat and critical infrastructure
The analyst highlighted Russia’s recent statement on the possibility of using nuclear resources, a potential escalation that has been a constant concern since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Additionally, Magnotta mentioned recent incidents that have heightened tensions, such as attacks on power stations and nuclear power parks near the border.
The analyst said experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency have expressed concerns about the safety of nuclear facilities in the region.
“We are seeing these resources increasingly being mobilized, going from one extreme of the possibility of a real nuclear attack as a way of trying to deduce the enemy’s offensive capacity to the other extreme which, often unintentionally, could cause some kind of disaster of this nature,” explained Magnotta.
The analyst said the situation is alarming considering that a ceasefire does not appear to be a concrete possibility.
