Donald Trump’s new running mate will take to the stage at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night (17) and is expected to present a radical populist agenda on trade, economics and foreign policy.
JD Vance will deliver the second-biggest speech of the week after Trump’s on Thursday (18) and is sure to root his appeal to voters in his tough childhood, his service as a US Marine, his first-class performance at Yale Law School and his time as a venture capitalist.
At 39, Vance is one of the youngest people to ever serve on a presidential ticket and has been in the Senate for less than two years. He is already seen as Trump’s heir apparent in the MAGA movement.
Vice presidential nominees’ speeches are often highly anticipated but are often quickly forgotten. One exception was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s electrifying speech as Senator John McCain’s Republican running mate in 2008. Palin famously declared, “They say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick.” But her nomination quickly fell through after it became clear that she was woefully unprepared for prime-time politics.
Vance’s main job is to avoid any mistakes that could derail a successful and tightly disciplined convention and, above all, to avoid overshadowing his new boss, who can get irritated when others take center stage.
But win or lose in November, Vance will be a fixture in national politics for the next decade, so Wednesday night represents a critical defining moment.
