An 11-year-old Argentinian boy won a Greek language competition

Became the firstCompetition of Etymology, Influence and Contribution of the Greek Language to the languages of the world» organized by Hellenic Cultural Organization Nostos of Argentina. The competition has been put under the auspices of the General Secretariat of Hellenism Abroad and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece.

The rationale of the competition is described as follows: “The study of the Greek language through its timeliness gives us the possibility to discover the extent and richness of her vocabulary, but also the extent to which it influenced the vocabulary of other languages through linguistic borrowing. For various reasons, such as the fact that the Greek language was used as a “lingua franca” for long periods of time in History or that Greek together with Latin was used in recent years as the languages of the sciences and their teaching in universities led to the formation of a lexical map that has strong Greek colors. In many sciences we find words of Greek origin.

Delving into the study of a language's vocabulary leads to a significant expansion of our knowledge of the language itself and commits us to a continuous learning process. Especially the GREEK language lends itself to these kinds of deepenings, as it has a particularly long history. For this reason, we consider that this Competition for the search for the etymology of words connected to Greek can facilitate the understanding of the terminology of scientific texts, be a trigger for the more systematic study of both Greek and its mother tongue of each participant and benefit his/her learning and language skills', according to ERT.

The competition was addressed to primary and secondary school studentsguided by their teacher as a member of the editorial team as well as teachers and professors sent their own papers on the topic.
