Amid criticism for lack of transparency, SP government announces tender for the purchase of body cameras

The Government of the State of São Paulo plans to launch, by May, a notice for the acquisition of 3,125 portable body cameras (COPs) for the Military Police, aiming to incorporate advanced technologies and improve public security.

The announcement comes after criticism directed at the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) regarding the transparency and legality of PM operations on the coast of SP.

This Monday (26), the State Council for the Defense of Human Rights of the State of São Paulo (CONDEPE) sent a representation to the Public Ministry of the State of São Paulo (MPSP), appointing the Secretary of Public Security of São Paulo, Guilherme Derrite, due to alleged non-compliance with legislation and lack of transparency in Escudo and Verão operations.

The representation emphasizes the absence of body cameras on military police uniforms and the non-response to requests for information by public institutions, raising concerns about the conduct of public security operations.

The Public Security Secretariat (SSP) informed that there will be improvements in the communication system for agents in the field, in the connectivity and quality of audio and video capture, in addition to an improved image storage system.

He also informed that the new equipment will allow the reading of vehicle license plates, facilitating the identification of stolen or stolen cars, and will be integrated into the Muralha Paulista Program.
