Amazon’s streaming platform, Amazon Prime, will become more expensive for Brazilians from May 20, the company said on Tuesday (3). The monthly package, which was offered for R$9.90, drops to R$14.90 – a 50% increase. While the annual option will go from R$89 to R$119, an increase of 33.7%.
For people who already have an account on the platform, the change will only take place on June 24. The tech giant said the price hike was necessary due to expanding benefits and rising overall operating costs.
As of May 20, the monthly subscription fee is R$14.90 and the annual subscription fee is R$119 – which maintains the price equivalent to 9.90/month.

“Amazon continues to invest in Amazon Prime, and in recent years we’ve added millions of available products to the program, all with fast, free, unlimited shipping with no minimum purchase amount; We brought exclusive offers and discounts, in addition to more high-quality digital entertainment, including movies, series, music, games and eBooks”, highlighted the company also about the reasons for the increase in the subscription value.
This is the first increase in the cost of the platform since Amazon Prime debuted in Brazil on September 10, 2019.
The readjustment does not only occur in Brazil. The company has increased the price of its annual Prime subscriptions from $119 to $139 a year in the United States. And the monthly subscription cost also increased from $12.99 to $14.99.
At the time, Amazon said it was raising the price because of the “expanded benefits of Prime membership,” such as Prime Video content and free same-day shipping of some products, as well as offsetting the rising labor and transport in its distribution network.
In all, the company has more than 200 million Prime members worldwide.
